98 C280 brakes thumping

Hi Folks, Car stopped fine until it sat about a week in cold weather (without park brake). Went to back up, released brake and heard loud snap. Car rolled back fine. Every since then when applying brakes under normal stopping conditions there is a thumping from right-rear wheel. (Feels almost like a flat spot on tire - only present when braking). Any suggestions before I bring it in to my mechanic?
Cheers,
jakl

Is there any amount of surface rust on the rotors? If so, things will return to normal when the rust is worn and burned off.

Hi Ali, no surface rust on rotors. I've driven 300-400 miles since and noise still present. Could it be worn rear pads? Indicator light on dash is NOT on.
Thanks for responding..

First a bang, then thumping? If it was me I would pull the wheel off and look at the rotor and pads. Something is going on there. Are you sure it is the right rear? I can often not tell exactly where noises come from with certainty.

On my 97 C280, the rear pads have no wear sensor. I believe rear wear sensors are only present on cars equipped with ASR, and my vehicle does not have ASR.

Check the pads visually for wear.

My 98 C230 has ASR but no wear sensors on the rear. Not sure if that is identical to C280 but same chassis.
