Pop-up Antennas When in Reverse?

I just bought a 1994 S320. It's my first Mercedes. I just noticed that when I put the car in reverse, two antennas pop-up out of the rear fenders -- one on each side of the trunk. I can't find these referenced in the manual. What are they? What are they supposed to do?
