Pop-up Antennas When in Reverse?

I just bought a 1994 S320. It's my first Mercedes. I just noticed that when I put the car in reverse, two antennas pop-up out of the rear fenders -- one on each side of the trunk. I can't find these referenced in the manual. What are they? What are they supposed to do?

These are supposed to help you "see" where the back of the car is while parking it. I forget what they are called.
