Transmission Problem - '88 300E

This afternoon I was remarking to my wife how great the car seemed to be running. Tonight we were going out to dinner, backed out of the driveway, no problem - but going forward, it felt like something was dragging, almost as if the parking brake was set. Then I realized that when I moved the shifter to neutral, it stayed in reverse. I of course put it back in the garage and took the VW. Does this sound like somthing inside the transmission? It does have a slight leak but I always check and keep it filled.

Thanks,

Ray Solomon

The reverse clutch pack has come apart. Usually caused by the spring retainer deflecting and releasing. If that is the case its time for a rebuild.

Thanks again, Steve. Should I just get an MB rebuilt with the 2 yr warranty? Or should I have mine fixed? 108K (supposedly) on 1988 car.

Thanks,
Ray

Depends a lot on the price. The job is a very good long term repair if one has experience. A good professional rebuild should be available for around 2k. A decent price on a MB rebuild would be a tough decision, but most MB rebuilds are sold for a bunch of money.
