Transmission Diagnosis using codes

Hello all,

I am posting this again in hopes of getting some fresh opinions on this topic. I took my car to my indie today hoping to find out what is causing the vibration I'm getting at @ 35-45 mph and 1300-1500 rpms. My mechanic started by pulling the codes from the engine, TCU and traction control modules. He got no readings from the engine and traction control but got 114 , 132 and 135 from the TCU. He said these codes are inconclusive and are kind of broad codes. He then cleared the codes drove the car around and pulled the codes again and got nothing..! He also checked the trans fluid... the level is find and there are no leaks but it is very burnt. For this reason he thinks we should start by a complete trans flush and fluid change (148.00). Any thoughts?

Thanks

Which car? If the 210 chassis, has he unplugged the big round connector on the transmission and checked for fluid in there? There shouldn't be any. Apparently it's a common problem. Happened to me and gave me a "Check Engine" light as well as strange transmission behaviors. Parts cost under ten bucks to fix it.

That is called a Transmission Plug Connector and it is the life of your electronic transmission. It is a known problem to Mercedes Benz and it STILL occures even on the newer 210 models.. as new as 2000 and up. I replace probubly one or two a week. The o-rings on the apadter (not the plug) fail and cause a leak which also leaks into the plug... And as we know oil conducts electricity, so all connections in that plug kinda mesh together.

Your problem does not sound transmission related though...

Take the car back to your mechanic or at least somewhere with a lift and have a look at the flex disk's on eather side of the drive shaft. Flex disks are big rubber "disk's" which connect the trans to the drive shaft and the drive shaft to the rear differental. If you were talking about the 1997 210 body it is at prime age for those disk's to start dry rotting and falling apart.

Reply back with some car info. you did not say in your post so i dont want to go into to much detail.

With Mercedes Benz... If the part looks cheap, its more expensive then you think. If the part looks expensive... Your screwed!

sorry guys... I know better too !! It is in fact the 210. I'm pretty sure the flex discs's are the first thing he checked. I know it was the first thing he mentioned to me. He is suppose to call me back in a few minutes and tell me when to bring it in today for him to check the codes again. I will ask him abou the plug/adapter and the flex disc's.

Thanks a bunch!

Also check the engine mounts and trans mount.

The rear trans mount cant "sagg" and loose its dapening abilities.

just a suggestion

MB,

Thanks for the tips. I just left the shop. We drove the car I don't know if it's a coincidence or not but the vibration doesn't seem as noticable to me now that the codes have been cleared. We went for a drive and my mechanic could not replicate the vibration at all. I gave it whirl and was able to get it to do it a little. He then checked the codes again and there is nothing. He checked all the codes from the plug in the fuse box. He said that he checked the trans adapter yesterday and everthing looks fine. There were no leaks behind the plug. He said the flex disc's look as though they've been replaced not too long ago. I'm assuming he also checked the trans mounts, I checked the motor mounts and they are fine. (not flat or leaking).

I think i've been scared enough by all this that I am ready to sell ther car..
