I'm not sure there is much of any difference between one brand to the next.
As far as I know, which is not much, there is summer diesel, and there is winter diesel, with the latter having higher cetane and anti-gelling additive.

Actually, diesel fuel varies considerably more than gasoline. I would try them all and see what gives the best milage and the least smoke. I'm fond of the local Shell, but that won't necessarily be what you get a the Shell dealer near you (different source).
