oil under engine

my car is c200 1997 car

lately, i noticed some oil on the plastic tray which is situated under the engine oil sump.

i am unable to pin point where the oil is originating from.

i looked at the engine oil dipstick and the oil level is at the midway mark between maxiumum and minimum

any ideas?

thanks in advance

Remove the plastic tray & inspect the oilpan, etc.

sump should have a copper gasket on the drain plug - is its missing?

do a search on this forum but on these cars I think there is a gasket between the dip-stick tube and the sump which can leak.

Get under there, do a little research and then report back to us as to where the oil is coming from.

If its not leaking from anywhere, it is possible someone just spilled some oil down there.

thanks for the ideas.

i will get my mechanic to remove the tray

the sump drain bolt washer could be a possibilty or even the cranshaft pulley oil seal or sump cover gasket.

Or it could be leaking from the timing chain cover (around distributor), and running on the side of the engine all the way down.
