What other types of fuel management can be used such as EFI or TBI?

280C Carburetors (110 engine)
My 280C has a Solex 4A1 4Bbl, and as far as I know, that's what all the 110 carbureted engines came with from the factory. They are a troublesome carburetor to maintain, and could have been replaced by the Holley on your vehicle. The 4A1 works real well on our car, but the mileage isn't very good - I blame the overall gear ratio more than the engine or carburetor for that. You must remember that when these cars were designed, fuel consumption was not an issue. The 4.3L V6 I put in my 300TD produces almost 1 1/2 times the mileage in town and twice the mileage on the freeway because it's got a better gear ratio and the fuel management is very precise. The 280E's used fuel injection, but it would be a big job to retrofit to your engine. (You'd probably have to replace the head) If I were you, I'd try to tune the setup you have so it works well. You might try replacing the differential with one that has a better ratio if you are interested in mileage.

Solex 4A1 information
Everything you ever wanted to know about your 4A1 carb can be found in the 1973 introduction to service manual. This isn't the most easy book to find. I can email you scans of the relevant pages if you need them. Let me know which year and make car you have and I can see if a later year's intro manual has more stuff.
If you haven't gotten it yet. Pickup the dealer service manual for the M110 motor and the relevant manual for the chassis. They are the most complete set of service procedures you'll ever see in print. A CD rom of all the books is available too if you have an aversion to paper. I know of the following possible forms of M110 fuel delivery: - The 4A1 carb - EFI (D-jet) - CIS - Weber conversion - Holly conversion As noted in the previous post, converting your car from carbs to fuel injection requires a change to the head. If you already have a replacement head, then most likely it was a fuel injected head with the ports sealed shut, since the engine manual says that was the only kind of head supplied as spares. -CTH |

Solex 4A1 - Your scans
Hi CTH, I'm new to Forum and struggling with 1975 280C carb problems. Just read this thread - do you still have the scans available? If so, could you email them to me at howard@dixondavis.com? Thanks. Howard Dixon
