bit of a dielemma here.

1991 w124 300d

Now this car had Eibach Pro-kit springs installed. but i had a problem with the fact that i do mobile disco and the back springs were always bottoming out under load.. plus i had a problem with the front right hand wheel always scraping the fender when going up a graidient.

now i purchased new springs from a english shop called German, Swedish and french car parts.

This is what it said on the box

Mercedes Front Spring, 300 6 cyl extra equipment. part number M45420
same part number for a range of the larger cars.

purchased heavy duty rear springs also. given the extra weight of the equipment i carry.

now installed the springs with a 2 bump on the front and 3 on the rear.

think theres something wrong with these pictures dont you?

mobile disco is when you are a DJ that needs to carry around loads of kit to different venues.

Those look like the rear springs in there!!!

Get us a better shot of the spring please! Also do you have AC and electric windows?

believe me bud.. they are not the rear springs in there.. the rears went in before the front did.. the rears are considerably smaller then these and compared up ok next to the rear ones taken out.

dont have Air Con on my model. can understand asking about air conditioning and the slightly increased weight on the car. but electric windows?

tell yer what. heres a pic of the car before these springs were put in.

been investigating this and its coming to light that maybe the wrong springs were in the boxes. they were a biach to get in anyway. and compared to the pro-kit springs.. there was about 4 extra coils on these new front ones.

Apparently the "Special" in the special equipment listing also includes not just electric windows and AC but electric front seats and automatic transmission. The big ones are obviously AC and Auto tranny.

I have a euro 230E no AC and I put in special equip HR springs and I got a similar look but not as high because HR's are notoriously low anyway.

I think your problem is the lack of AC and the fact that those are standard springs. And maybe the stuff in the back too

hmm you may be right but ive spoken to the shop where i bought them.. they have taken my chassis number and come up with the same part number for the car. and supplied the springs to the chassis number.

on invoice. it states.

124 24V/Diesels

bear in mind that this is a 6 Cylinder Diesel engine anyway. this is right to what they have on their computer. think the thing is now is were the right springs in the boxes? these pictures were taken with nothing in the back. i cant even drive this car the way it is at the moment so it will have to stay like that.

how many coils are on normal stock springs ?

Looks like you got the ultra rare "off-road" springs........

i know.... think ill be entering the monster truck competition next time its in town.

One way to get the front suspension to sit high is to tighten the control arm bolts (eccentric bolts) while the front end is jacked up. Should be tightened with all weight on wheels.

The rear does drop more than the front with the Eibach springs. I adjusted the ride height by using 3-bump rear spring pads with 1-bump front pads and now I have a symmetrical drop of about one inch. I also used Bilstein HD shocks, which I think were originally designed for carrying heavier loads. I chose the HD shocks because they have about the same valving as the Bilstein Sport shocks and they work on a car at the original ride height or on a car that is just very slightly lowered. I also use my car for family vacations and I have a bike rack that I mount on a receiver hitch, so I sometimes need the extra support from the HD shocks.

If I were you, I would go back to the Eibach springs, get Bilstein HD shocks, and adjust the height with spring pads. Another option would be to go to the dealer and get OEM springs with Bilstein HD shocks. If you go back to OEM, you can get the car a little lower by using the 1-bump spring pads.

About one inch lower with Eibach, Bilstein HD, 1-bump front, and 3-bump rear

as it turns out. the supplier that i bought the springs off has their part number listed for a 300D the lesjofors springs at L5000 - 73700 which surprisingly are to fit a 94-95 E320 Soloon.

the part number i need for my car is L5000 - 73699

small mistake to make considering the size of computer databases but maybe it needs customer feedback to fix problems like this.

The money does become an issue if you are not DIY mechanic. I seem to be out a minimum of $400.00 US, every time my “very special” Porsche race tuner mechanic touches my car. He seems knowledgeable and yet it has been trial and error dealing with issues that result from lowering the ride height. Even though he is a Porsche specialist, I think he should be aware of issues that arise from lowering a suspension. For example, I learned that the front caster increases when you lower the car, but if you adjust it back to the original specification, it can move the wheel off-center inside the fender. The caster relationship must be similar on all vehicles, because of basic rules of geometry, so I am surprised my mechanic hasn’t seen the same situation when modifying the Porches that he usually plays with. I would use my normal independent mechanic but he won’t touch anything but OEM parts. I suspect the dealer would also refuse to do some of the things I have tried, but they did agree to upgrade my swaybars to “Sportline Plus” with the limo front and E500 rear bars. It won’t be cheap at the dealer, but at least there shouldn’t be any surprises.
