gas fumes

Yesterday I filled my 190E with gas, now there are strong fumes coming from the trunk...this is new. Do I need a new gas cap or something? I can't find any gas running out or anything like that in there...just strong smell.

Wish I could help you. Every now and then I get the same thing in my 190. It comes, then goes. I'd like to know too.

If coming from the trunk it could be two places. First the Fuel Sending Unit's rubber O ring and the second would be the filler tubes seals! Also do you try to pump extra in the tank or just stop when the filler stops?

It may have been too full....I was on a hill when I filled it up and it was tilted away from the pump...there was a little gas inside the trunk on the carpet, but I can't find the place where it came out of the tank, no trickle lines down or anything...the seal around the sender doesn't appear to be leaking...I just have to watch and not fill it so full next time...plus, I got a new gas cap, I think mine isn't working appropriately anymore, at 16 years old it won't hurt

Now that I think of it, the gas cap may have been my problem too. Last time I had the car inspected (once a year here in VA), I had to replace the cap. I don't remember any gas fumes since.
