Dead MB 300E 1988

Well, dear friends I was driving down the street and the car died on me.
After several unsucessful tries to restart, I gave up.
I wanted to run the diagnostics codes for the car.
Do I need to buy one of these $500 scanners or I can do it some other way?
How about the codes? where can I find a list of them?
I do not hear the fuel pump running so I am guessing a fule pump relay??
