M.B. Doc ASR Light Remains On?

I am in need of a diagnosis of a ASR Light remaining on with the engine running on my 92 500E. The ASR system appears to operate correctly, to test it I have floored it and get wheel spin for only about 5 to 10 ft, then the ASR warning light with the Triangle in the Speedometer with come on and the spinning stops.

Is this the correct operation? From what I have learned, this is how it should work. What could cause the ASR light to stay on?

1. Faulty ABS sensor in one of the rear wheels?

2. Faulty ASR module?

3. Short in the light circuit?

I've no CD or manual at this point but would prefer to do any work I can myself, any help would be most appreciated before it goes to the shop next week.

ASR

Couple months ago I have a similar situation with this light. To make the History Short it cost me $ 1.267 dollar for a modulator. Everything has to do with the accelerator system. I own a 400SEL 93.
Hope is not that.

Ross,
The OVR {Over voltage relay} is kind of a voltage spike protection supressor. It may be different on your model than mine, [ E320], but a search on OVR will get you the info that helped me with mine.
I got a new one from Parts Shop and the new was an up-dated part # as the original was troublesome. { As the Search will indicate ]
Aside from the ASR light, the new one also solved some stall and start problems
also common to OVR's .
Check with Parts Shop and see if yours has been updated.
Arthur

Update,

The car was at the shop yesterday and the news appears good. The computer returned no fault codes, and the ASR system operates normal, so the problem must be with the wiring to the ASR fault light in the Instrument Cluster?

Any suggestions?

If only the ASR lamp comes on then the problem is usually in the throttle actuator! Most all of the 1992 cars had this problem. The 500E had SI(bulletin) on this subject. Had to replace t/actuator & re-route wiring across valve cover. What computers did they scan?? EA & ASR

M.B.DOC,

I am not sure what computer they scanned. Today I had the Instrument Cluster fuse go kaput! All gauges went dead and ABS/Check Engine light also stayed lit. After replacing the fuse all gauges worked normally, with the exception of the ASR light still on (original problem).

I was unaware that I could check the Codes so easily on my car! After learning how to do it (from this board), I received the following codes from the push button LED;

2, 4, 5 ,17

Can someone translate? Help.

Thanks.

The "LED" pushbutton is for fuel system (check engine) information. code # 2= oxygen sensor failure
code # 4= air injection system malfunction
code # 5= EGR system malfunction
code # 17= data exchange problem in "e-box"
Note that none deal with ASR system as that is a seperate computer. Must use scan tool to retrieve codes.

Thank You M.B.Doc,

I am unsure if these codes existed the last time I took the car in to the shop, as the mechanic told me that their were no codes? Is it OK to erase the codes and see if they reappear? I have a feeling that these are old codes and where not reset in the past.

Time to take the car in again.

Sorry I did not close this thread out sooner.

The independant shop I frequent went about correcting the ASR Light issue and determined that it was a faulty brake switch (located behind the brake pedal).

Case closed.
