300TE tachometer won't go above 1k rpm

reving car up tach, rpm reading won't go above approx. 1000 rpm. I believe the fuel pump relay also handles the tach. Exchanging relays & checking plugs on back of instrument cluster haven't changed things.
Any suggestions?

a bad ground can cause this. try pulling the cluster and running an extra ground wire from the back of the metal part of the housing that has the tach to a metal ground point on the car (there are plenty behind the cluster).

sticking gear!

What I mean is that maybe the internals of the tach came out of alignment and the gearing can only move so far before it locks up.... a jumped spring could cause this.....

My recommendation:
Buy a used cluster (a three gauges in the big shell) from ebay for about $30
Take it's tach and swap it with yours...
If it does not work, then I will buy the cluster from you for whatever you paid plus shipping... I am not kidding, I am dead serious!

But I could be wrong, just wait a bit, someelse will chime in with some more tips real soon!

This link describes how to check the rpms at the X11 diagnostic connector. While it may not be totally helpful, you might be able to isolate the trouble:

Your problem happened to me when I took off my cluster to try and fix the odo....

i think you should try to take out the cluster....and disconnect and reconnect the tach wire.... maybe use a little dielectric grease on it..

I am not much help... I totaled out that car before I had a chance to take my own advice...
