My 1988 Mercedes 420SEL has a creaking noise comming from the right front suspension. The noise started as a slight noise but quickly has changed into a rather embarsing creak you can hear for quite a distance. The sound is like a boat scraping against a warf, more of a metal-rubber noise than metal on metal. But, mostly loud and very offensive. I have tried lubercating the rubber bushings I can find with silicone spray with no success, I have often heard this type of noise in a number of older cars. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks.

sounds like it could be the upper shock mount. You'll should find quite a lot of info in the search about it. I think it's a fairly easy job to replace if that's it.

As I have redone the entire suspenion on my 126 I would like to help, but Perhaps you might tell us more - like is it constant ? driving only - as opposed to getting in and out of car, during turns, hitting bumps in the road, etc. Have you considered wheel bearings ? they too "do the scrape".

I had the same thing on my 92 300e. About a month ago I made a tiny hole in the top of the rubber boot on the ball joint and injected some 30 weight oil with a plastic syringe. Immediately stopped the noxious creek. This weekend I am replacing the ball joints, but only out of "preventative maintenace" (is hasn't creeked at all since getting lubed).

suspension creak
Quote:
The noise is present on entry to the car, when turning, when going straight and , in general, constantly whenever movement is encountered either lateral or vertical. |

If it is present upon entering use a helper to try and identify the source.
I once had something similar. Turned out to be a defective bearing bracket (front subframe mount) that was only discovered when you actually touched it and felt the vibration. Good Luck |
