91 300CE suddenly no start
Hi All,
On saturday I treated Kurt Koupe to some new oil, a new filter, and cleaned his ABS sensors while waiting. When I had filled the oil I tried to start the engine, but it wouldnt fire. I wonder did I do something inadvertently like disconnect a wire?? The car was running fine up till then. Battery seems good, lots of energy, fuel pump kicked in at ign time. Had a helper check the plug (no. 1) and told me there was no spark. I took off the coil and brought it to work today. The resistance values appear within Merc specs for both primary and secondary. Any one got any suggestions as to next steps? I have the service CDs and will get a multimeter so I can check the car on Saturday again. (had to go to work and leave it behind....!!) n Thanks gerard |

That sounds like something that would happen at a shop on a Friday when things are already backed up.
I can't think of anything you could have messed up on an oil change. I would check again to be sure there is no spark and shoot a spray of carb cleaner onto the air plate to be sure you don't have a fuel delivery problem.Peter

5.00 Friday
Yep, it happened at 5.15 on a Saturday evening, all local parts shops and breakers closed!! I'll double check the spark when I get home Saturday.
I treat Kurt to some synthetic oil and he sticks his fingers up at me!! heh heh. Gerard |

Update!!
After a few days of Kurt starting and stopping I think I finally found the cause. I think it was bad wiring left over from an old alarm system. Using the wiring diagrams I found all the wires connected to the ignition coil. I traced these to the Fuse/Relay box (pink and red wire) and under this the supply wire had been broken and reconnected to an alarm system.
The alarm was subsequently removed and as the supply for the ignition coil was broken, the guy just stripped back the insulation on the extended wires and twisted the two wires together!! The connection was all corroded, you know the story!! I clipped the extension wires, resoldered the original wires under the fuse box and put some heatshrink on. The car has started no problem and doesn't miss any more. Fingers crossed!! gerard |
