1992 300te 4matic with 186K...
Recently I have had two problems (no snickering from the anti-4matic set,lol)

1.my gas gauge will flutter if i am below 1/2 tank

2.the car will sputter/surge if i am low on fuel (ie when my yellow low fuel light comes on)....today was the worse where the car would basically shut of if i came to a stop.
The problem cleared up after i filled up the tank.

Any help appreciated even from the anti-4matic set.

Fluttering gas gauge is a tank sender issue.

The other issue doesn't sound normal, but it is fuel related. Perhaps fuel pressure isn't maintained very well with low fuel levels. Sounds like gravity is the only thing maintaining fuel pressure.

How do your fuel pumps sound? "Hissing" or "buzzing"?
