Fuel Additives ????????

Anyone have any ideas on some good fuel additives that can improve milleage and performance. I mean ones that really work. I have a 1987 300E

Chevron Techron Fuel Sys. Cleaner. You'll find it in black bottles with Chevron's logo on it. This stuff is strong, per the label "......use every 3,000 miles". So I gather that anything sooner that 3K would be harmful. I once used some fuel sys. cleaner from STP that said flat out, don't use any sooner than 4K miles.
Each bottle is good for up to 12 gallons. If your car is like our newly acquired SL, and has a fuel tank of 22 gal. Then you'll have put in 2 bottles. The lable also say to pour this stuff in before fiulling up. I guess this way it mixes real well.

I hear that the BG 44K is supposed to be a great product although I haven't tried it yet.

I have been using Lubro Moly Jectron which works for me. The moment I put in in and step on the pedal I feel a difference. I have used this product along with the valve cleaner "Ventil Sauber" in 5 different cars and always felt a difference. The throttle reponse is better and increased mileage. All the cars I have used the products in have had more than 60,000 miles.

There are no "silver bullet" fuel or oil additives that will improve mileage or performance, assuming your engine is performing nominally. Chevron Techron can clean off some injector and valve deposits that can cause driveability problems, and this may improve mileage if the car is running poorly, but gasoline additives won't do much for an engine that is running normally.

A slight idle roughness on M103 engines is normal and is due to the relatively lean idle mixture (stoichiometric) that is required for emissions. Mercedes service literature states that the lambda equipped M103s, will not idle as smooth as non-lambda configurations available in some markets, which are set up with richer idle mixture.

As long as the engine has good throttle response and runs smoothly above idle, a fuel additive will probably not have any effect.

M103s will run satisfactorily on regular unleaded fuel in cool weather, but you need to watch out for detonation in hot weather city driving the the A/C on and coolant temps over 90C.
