380SL Starter Removal
I need to replace the starter solenoid on my 1982 380SL and ran into difficulty while trying to remove the starter.
I assume the starter needs to be removed in order to replace the solenoid but I cannot reach one of the two starter bolts. The lower bolt can be removed from underneath the car but the top bolt seems to be a real pain using standard tools under a jack stand. I removed the lower bolt and learned it is not standard, requiring a hex tool. Can someone with starter removal experience provide some advice? Is there a special tool needed, or should something be removed to get access from the top? Thanks. |

You have to get at the top bolt from the back side. A very long extension and socket may get it. I looked at my setup (72 SL) and chose to have it done by my mechanic who could do it on a lift.

I don't know if the tool offered by HAZET is what you need but here are the particulars:"Specialty tool,10mm.,six point,1/2" drive, universal joint. For inside hexagon screws e.g. for installing and removing the starter." Expect to pay around $50-$60.Part #2755.

Thanks. I found the HAZET part and might be able to put together a similar swivel/hinge socket setup without doing a purchase. I sure hate to pay someone to remove a bolt.

What was the result? I am having a similar issue and am hesitant about buying a new tool right now.

380SL starter removal
Ok,
I have the hazet tool, and it doesn't help unless you remove the transmission dip stick assy. The tube blocks access to the upper bolt. I had to drain my trans pan, remove the dipstick assy, and then I was able to get the starter out. This is required when you do a front main seal, as you have to install a tool in place of the starter to lock the ring gear. FYI |
