E240 stalling problem - engine temperature sensor?
Hi,
I am hoping to find some clues to this in a 2001 E240 (Bizarre 2.6 model). It drives fine, then randomly stalls. The engine fan cuts in, the engine temperature sensor drops to read zero and ABS/ESP warnings come on. The engine will not start. This stays as the case for a few minutes. Then, the fan cuts out, the dash goes back to normal and it drives OK. The engine temperature remains normal (it's not overheating), and there are NO faults stored in the computer. Weird? you bet. I Could only guess at the crank position sensor, but with the other issues I'm not so sure. Is there an engine temperature sensor capable of causing this? thanks Russell

I was thinking crank sensor as well, its one of the most common occurances on these engines. Couldn't hurt to try it, easy to change out.

Here is the USA MB is recalling almost all of the V-6 powered cars for OVER-CHARGING problems from the voltage regulator. That could also be the problem that you are having!
ON any M112/113 engined cars I would have the crank sensor replaced after 4 years! THEY will leave you walking!

Well the E240 is dead now.
The crankshaft position sensor was replaced, but to no avail - the car continues to randomly lose all power, stall and now finally will not start. The engine does not even turn over (i.e. the starter doesn't turn) but the battery is fine. Instead, the engine cooling fan powers up when you switch the ignition on even if the engine is cold, and turning the key has no effect, no lights dim, no guages move, nothing. New Mercedes suck!

Well it's fixed.
It turned out to be.. err.. some sort of 'box' with relays and that sort of stuff in. (I didn't do it!) Sorry I can't be more helpful, but may help others with a similar problem (by recent standards that will probably be about another 3,500,000 people.
