1992 300E Oil Viscosity/Consumption

Hello! I'm new to the forum, and I just acquired my first Mercedes; a 1992 300E with 93,000 miles on the clock. My questions are: What is the recommended oil viscosity for this engine? The previous owner has been using Mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30 weight. I have noted some oil consumption, perhaps a quart every 1,000 miles. The cylinder head was reworked with new valve stem seals at mileage 79,000. Also, on cold start-up there is some chain or valve train (?) rattle for a few seconds; should this be addressed? It does not occur on every cold start.

Otherwise, the car runs and drives very well.

Thanks for any advice.

Nick

Did you get the owner's packet with the car?

I received the owner's and service manual, but the manuals do not reference the proper oil viscosity to use.

My car is a 300TE from 1992. At 85'000 miles the head gasket and valve were done. However it always consumed about 1 quart in 3000 miles, running 0w-40 Mobil1. When doing oil changes I added the 6 liters as stated in the owner's manual.
Recently I switched to 15w-50 Mobil EP. Also I only added 6 quarts (instead of 6 liters) at the oil change. The dipstick indicates 2/3 between min and max. Oil consumption has stopped. I do not know which of the two changes caused the stop - my guess would be only adding 6 quarts did it.
Regards, Bruno

I used 10-30 Mobil 1 since I rebuilt the head and new valve seal on my 91 300E. The car was using about 1 qt very 500 miles before the valve seal.

There should be a viscosity chart in the back of the owner's manual that provides the approved viscosity for a given temperature range.

Voila! And here I thought I'd read the manual cover to cover. I missed that page, and you all must think

Thanks, Anthony; I found it.

Mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30 weight is an excellent choice.

Mobil 1 Synthetic 15 W 50 change interval 7.5K for the whole life of the car with oil consumption 0 (zero).
Valve stems and head gasket done at 140K. Now I have 185k. Engine running perfect.
