1989 300E Cold Start Problem
Just recently my 89 300 E has been having problems starting, it starts but immediately stalls. I restart several times before it will run. Once i get it going it does just fine until I turn it off and let it set for an hour or so then won't start on first time again? Any ideas. I had it serviced, still didn't fix problem.

Does it run rough until warm?
I mean is it a rough idle until the temp gage is up to 40 to 60° C?

Your hard starts cold could be due to a vacuum leak. There could be a problem with the cold start valve. There may also be a problem with the EHA, it’s an electronically activated valve (from the engine control unit) which controls the pressure differential in the fuel distributor. Do you sometimes smell gas when trying to start cold? If so suspect the EHA.

Yes, it runs rough and I have to give it a little gas once I get it started.
Thanks for you suggestions. |

If your ABS light is also on... thats almost certainly what your looking at. As it's running good when warn it's something in the warm up mixture thats off... the OVP protects that circuit... If you ABS light is not on you might want to have the water temp sensor (on top of the engine block) tested: http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1FX0MB1RS1IC00CTTV&year=1989&make=MB&model=300-E-002&category=C&part=Water+Temp.+Sensor&appEngines=_any As the coolant warms up it's resistance changes to inject more fuel to a colder engine. I think these are your best starting points. Edit in bold
