Stupid (yet important) question...

Hey guys... I'm new to the forum... I have an 87 420SEL with 277,000 miles, noticed the other day that it's leaking transmission fluid and is extremely low; so my question is... what exactly is MB Transmission Fluid? Is there an equivalent I can buy at a parts store, or does it HAVE to be MB transmission fluid?

Shaun

It's a good question. MB trannsmissions of that era use Dexron, which you can buy at any parts shop. Only in the mid-90s did MB start using "special" transmission fluid which you buy at an MB dealer.

Do you have an owner's manual? If not, you can call 800-FOR MERC and they'll be glad to sell you one.

Any brand name Dextron-Mercon III fluid will be Fine. Hell, any trans fluid is better then no/low fluid!

Add fluid in Small increments, the difference b/w high and low on the stick doesn't take much.

The OE fluid is the Febi fluid.

Just a picky point -- when you ask for it, it's "Dexron," not "Dextron" as often written...
