Ignition restore

I have an aftermarket ignition switch and key on my 85 300SD. Is there anyway I can rebuild the ignition switch so I can use the real key without the original tumblers? Has anyone done this. I would assume a bored locksmith might be able to figure this out. Would love to be able to use a single laser cut key. Has anyone done a similar project. I know I could get a set from a junked car but it would not match the VIN.

Haven't but will be watching to see if anyone chimes in. On my SD had to drill out trunk lock - got a salvage lock (no key). Just replacing ignition cylinder with Fastlane lock and the door lock are OEM. Was thinking about having them all re-keyed (alike). Maybe I am just having another pipe dream

rekeying the ignition lock.

This is a trivial task for a competent locksmith. Take the ignition lock apart for him to save time. He needs the tumbler and key and the key you want to fit it to. He then has to cut (or select) pins to the correct lengths for the desired key nd refit them in the tumbler assembly.

So I would have to find an OEM compatible or OEM key assembly and have it adjusted to my key. The current key hole is a totally different style key and my key wouldn't even fit width wise
