Odometer Failure. Help
I have owned (still own 2) benzes.
On my 300D the odometer failed at 160,000 miles and the 420SEL at 225,000 miles. On those two, there were enough miles that I didn't figure it was worth repairing. Now on my SL500, the odometer has failed at 67,000 miles. I am almost afraid to take it to a dealer and have them tell me it will cost $2500 to fix it. Does anyone know what the common causes of this failure is and what it should cost to have it repaired. I have an idea this is not a DIY project. Any help or ideas? Thanks |
there are a million posts on this if you search the archives.

Shumi,
I am new to this. The first thing I did was click on search forums and put in the keyword "odometer" and I came up with nothing helpful. Maybe I just don't know how to search this website but hopefully someone will give me some answers since I am so ignorant. |
Did you try to reset the mileage while the car was moving? This can strip the gears in the odometer. Sorry, I can't offer any help with the fix. I bought a different gauge cluster with near exact mileage to remedy mine.

VDO mechanical odometers are well known by Mercedes, Porsche, Volvo, etc. owners for being failure items over time. Without knowing what year your SL is, if it is a mechanical counter, then a speedometer repair shop, like www.paspeedo.com or www.nhspeedometer.com can fix it. There are other companies that can do it as well.

Since you mentioned SL500, I assume you have R129 body style, and a post '93. Your odometer is digital and therefore no mechanical parts in it. I am not sure you can fix the digital one and you may have to bite the bullet and get a new one if that bothers you. I am sort of surprised that your digital odometer fails at 67K miles.
