Odometer Failure. Help

I have owned (still own 2) benzes.
On my 300D the odometer failed at 160,000 miles and the 420SEL at 225,000 miles. On those two, there were enough miles that I didn't figure it was worth repairing.
Now on my SL500, the odometer has failed at 67,000 miles. I am almost afraid to take it to a dealer and have them tell me it will cost $2500 to fix it.
Does anyone know what the common causes of this failure is and what it should cost to have it repaired.
I have an idea this is not a DIY project.
Any help or ideas?
Thanks
