1990 300e laundry list

Well its time to catch up on some small items but I need a little help. Here goes...
1. The resonator fell off today. It broke off at the weld to the tailpipe and the resonator looks fine but should I try to cut out the piece of pipe in the unit and try to have a short piece of pipe welded back on and then to the pipe?
2. Coolant expasion tank has a sensor in it and the socket that is on the wires that plug onto it has cracked and will not stay on. Where can I get one and what is it called?
3. The alternator was replaced and now the radio will not come on. I have the "code" but all the display reads is "wait" and never changes(wife not happy!!).HELP
4.Tube leading from side of valve cover to top of air cleaner has a small vacuum line attached (or was) to it. The tube cracked at the connection place for the vacuum line. Once again where can I get one and what is it called?
5. At the point where the tube previously mentioned goes into the top of the air filter there is always a puudle of oil. Can anything be done to correct that
6. Car uses about 1 qt. of oil every 2000 miles. Car has 218000 miles on it and runs well. I see no smoke and no significant leaks(other than that mentioned). Any clues?
7..Last one , occasionally on accelerating from a stop, the car will hesitate, tune up, cap& wires have not corrected it, occasional. Where do I go from here?

Thanks in advance for your help!

1) Probably repairable, depends on your exhaust shop. I've replaced all three cans on my exhaust system over time by cutting out the old ones and replacing with new units. Naturally, your mileage may vary.

2) If you're talking about the actual plastic connector that holds the contact sleeves, you'll be lucky if you can find a replacement. Try your dealer. otherwise, replace the connectors with aftermarket sleeves.

3) No idea. Have monster third party stereo in mine

4) You can get a new tube from your parts shop or dealer. Your first port of call should be Fastlane, who host this forum. If, like me, you live outside the US and cannot take advantage of their services, you can at least try to find the part number there.

5) Don't know about this, certainly doesn't happen on mine. Maybe its blowback from the rocker cover, which means you've got some sort of non-standard pressure going on in there, which may well be linked to...

6) Seems like a lot of oil is being used somewhere, my engine has 170,000 kms on it, which admittedly is a lot less than yours, but uses no oil between changes every 5,000 kms. If its not being burned in combustion, and doesn't appear to be leaking, maybe its blowing out somewhere. Check more thoroughly for leaks, esp in the engine compartment.

7) Have you checked your spark plugs recently? They might need cleaning or replacing, and don't use platinum, stick with the recommended type. You should also check the fuel filter, if its clogged it can cause this behaviour, and based on my own experience I'd take it off and check if there's water in there. You might also want to clean the inlet lines to the fuel distributor, try a search in this forum. I sure hope its one of those things, elsewhere lies madness and desperation while you try to get the fuel injection system back on track. Before you do anything with the fuel system, check all the hoses for brittleness and leaks. If the breather hose is broken, chances are the rest are in need of attention.

you should do a search on a lot of this stuff, there's plenty of help and advice lurking in the archives.

good luck

The socket for the expansion tank can be obtained by the dealer. They are cheap (around $2 when I bought them about a year or so ago). The radio is probably a replacement - which means the code does not work. You might be able to obtain the real code from the dealer. You will have to remove the radio to get the serial number from the unit.

Thanks for the help guys. I need to know what you mean when you say that the oil on the air filter top may be a result of some unusal pressures in the valve cover. Are you saying that pressure from the cylinders are getting up to that area and if so what can be done to verify this and correct it if it is something that should be done?

item 4, the part is called a breather hose. there are 4 of them, this is the one that goes from air cleaner housing to ___. it is like $12. If I were you I'd replace the other 2 breather hoses in that area that are easy to replace (the other one is under an injector and much harder to acccess). all those hoses are likely petrified and don't seal as well as new soft rubber hoses, you will be amazed at difference in feel of old vs. new hoses.

Yes. The part # is on the connector. The metal pins do come out attached to the wires. Mine had corrosion all over them. I soaked them in Mt.Dew (soft drink, not the other stuff ) and it did a good job of removing the corrosion. Be careful - the wires and the metal pins sometimes are so corroded that they come apart.

Thanks for the help. I would still like to find out more about why there is oil on top of the air cleaner housing, where the tube from the valve cover enters the top of the housing.
