Ac E320

AC Compressor would not come on this spring. Had the system charged this morning, (it took the whole 2.2 LBS.) Worked great until this evening, then I noticed the compressor working intermittently....on, off, on, off. There was no "noticable" leak detected during the AC service this morning. I'm guessing there is a leak nonetheless. Of course, no appreciable cooling is going on, either. Where could leak be coming from? Does this sound like a compressor problem? I gotta tell ya, I've serviced the hell out of this car and at 100,000 miles, it's starting to go belly-up on me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dave

If this is a W124 E320 (i.e. up to M.Y. 1995)... a common failure item is the evaporator... leak can be checked if there's dye (pre-mixed with the freon) showing up in the water drained underneath the car. Hope that's not the problem on your car as the fix -- replacing the evaporator -- is quite expensive, 15 hours labour plus parts.

A search thru the forum here should turn up a lot more info.

Hi Dave If you have the 1998 like in your previous post i would inspect the pressure hose from the drier to the condensor if leaking you should see some oil on it ,also the bottom plug on the expansion valve are known for leaking as well,as in prior post add some dye and you should find it.joeym

If it's leaking that fast, you can try dribbling soapy water on suspect areas and look for bubbles.
