Transmission Information????

Can anyone tell me the difference between a 1985-500SEL transmission and a 1991-420SEL Transmission...Can the 91-420 transmission be used in the 85. They are both 126's....Jim

The 500sel transmission is Mercedes part #126-270-37-01, or #126-270-08-00 or #126-270-59-01 or #126-270-49-01 and all are a 722.311 while the 420sel is Mercedes part #126-270-29-00 which is a 722.355 according to:
http://www.autoshoppingcenter.com/transmissions/MERCEDES400transmissions.html

You could also ask these people:
http://www.europeantransmissions.com/Tranisite/mercedes.htm

or

http://www.jie.com/Mercedes/mercedes_benz_transmissions.htm

It looks like they are different.

Yes, you can use that transmission!!! The only differences are in the valve body for slightly different torque that the larger 560 engine develops.

Will a person notice any differences if they were to do a swap? I wanted to get a stronger transmission for my 1989 300ce, like maybe a400e or 500e transmission, but Mercedes insisted on using the exact one on the car, the 722.358, and so did the rebuilder. I ended up with a 722.358 2nd gear start with the new updates.

So my question to you, is which transmission would have been the best one I could have used for my 1989 300ce?
