does anyone know if this gear knob off an 129 SL will fit my 124?

i don't think so.... the 124 knob has threads at the bottom and a slot cut through it...

if you need one, I have a spare that I could let go for a reasonable price...it's mint... I bought a bird's eye wood knob.

No it won't fit. The shaft is way to short.
It won't fit with the shaft adapter either because the knob is permanently attached to the shaft just like the W124 ones. In order to use the adapter you will have to get the shaft of the knob.

I could have sworn I've seen it done . Maybe I'm mistaken. Sorry
