'89 300E losing coolant, please help

There will be very minimal leaking for a day or two and then, suddenly, there will be a pool of coolant below the car. Then nothing again for a while, etc. Is this a normal mode for a water pump failure? I would have thought if it leaks it leaks - why this apparently on/off mode?

cheers

A bad water pump will leak much more when the engine cools down which is why there is a puddle of coolant under your parked car. You can proove this by placing a white cloth under the water pump after shutting the car down for the night and then remove the cloth the next morning, if it's wet replace the pump.

Hook up a cooling system pressue tester. Lots of info on this in the archives. Do not do this test on a hot engine.
