'99 E320 A/C problems

I have a friend who is experiencing a problem with his AC in his '98 210 E320.

Symptoms:

Upon startup, the compressor engages for approximately 1- 2 minutes. After which it disengages. If the car remains running, the compressor continues to stay off. However, shutting the car off and restarting starts the process over again.

Refrigerant is at the proper level. Pressure holds perfect.

I appreciate any kind of assistance you may supply.
