It depends on what year it is. The early, i think up to 94 had a knob that was attached to a shaft, screws out from the bottom of the shaft, the newer 95 on attached to the top of the shaft, of the original is on it, there will be a black plastic ring on the bottom of the knob, that twists a quarter turn and then just pull it up. Good luck!

1996, Sorry I forgot to put the year. I looked at my knob and it has a ferrule under the leather before it reaches the chrome shaft, but it doesn't seem to want to turn and I don't want to use pliers. Which way does it turn from drivers seating position,?

I had to use pliers to remove mine. Twist it counter clockwise about a quarter turn, put a cloth between the plastic and the pliers to keep from scrathing it. Once that is loose grab the handle and twist it a bit and it will come loose from the shaft. Good luck.

On my 1993 300SE the knob and handle are one piece and it is removed by pressing down (it is spring loaded) and turning a quarter of a turn in either a right hand or left hand direction. Sorry, I cannot remember which. Use caution if yours is this type as not keeping it inline when doing the removal or replacement, it is easy to tear off the lip holding the c clip which keeps the spring in place. The yoke is made of cheap potmetal and I tore off two (at about $30 each) when working on my shift console.
