My '91 300 SL will not shift into fifth gear until I am going at least 50MPH. Can this be adjusted to shift at an earlier speed? For example 40MPH.

Why would you want top gear at a low speed. It sounds quite normal to me. I would be sure that the vacuum system is working correctly if you are having harsh shifting.
