Can you help me on how you can judge that your shock absobers need replacement!!!


Which absorbers need replacement always, the front ones or the back ones.

What do you prefer the original abosrobers or a german third party absobers.

For me I have Mercedes E 200, and it's droping hardly when I drive it in a holy street. Even I become afraid that it will effect the engine itself.

So please Advise professionals,

I change shocks based on handling and the appearance of oil. I have an 88 300 SEL which needed new shocks at about 80,000 mi. It tended to nose into the curves and felt unsteady. I checked the front and rear shocks and found oil leaking from both. I replaced these with German non MB orininal part units (BOGE) for half the price and 28,000mi later I'am stil happy.

Bilstein claims that their shocks retain something like 98% of their effectiveness at 100k mi., so barring any leaks (which would be visible as wetness on the outside of the shocks) they should be fine for a long time. If you've noticed a deterioration in performance, however, then you've answered your own question; sounds like a shock or two is getting weak.

I like OE stuff, but I'm sure that products from the OE suppliers (Boge, Bilstein, not sure who else)would be highly adequate.
