88 300e head gasket

the head is ready to come off. intake/exhaust manifolds are off. I have never done this on a vehicle with a timing chain. whats next?

Talking next

if the intate and exhaust is off congrats...

remove the transmission dip stick and then go to the front of the motor..

remove the shock absober to the right...

remove the distributor,
remove the rotor,
then use a T30 to remove the rotor mount that connects to the cam shaft.

then remove the metal cover which is the top portion of the timing chain..

its best to turn the engine to top dead center.

now use some twist ties and tie the chan to the gear and remove it..

then comes the worst part and that is the plastic timing chain guide on the right.... if you figure it out then let me know..

the top snaps off and the stud is suppose to be pulled out with a puller...

if you break it its only 10 bucks... good luck...

i just got my head reworked for 180 bucks...

you mean the passenger side? I think I'm supposed to retract it with the allen key on the passenger side also. right?

the top snaps off and the stud is suppose to be pulled out with a puller...

the top of what snaps off? and should I only buy the head gasket from the dealer?

if you break it its only 10 bucks... good luck..

nope

If your facing the motor then the thing on the left side
exhaust side is the tensioner.... its the thing on the drivers side
which is the bear... its a plastic guide that has a stud in the head..

oh its really tough....your best bet is probably just to break it..
but let me know how it goes...

you can

you can leave the tensioner alone...

i took a broom handle and laid it across the hood fender to fender then
took a plastic tie and held the gear up in the air with the timing chain still on it and with tension...

the only problem is the plastic timing chain guide. on the other side.
