O2 Sensor on 1985 2.3-16v

I have been getting extremely poor gas milage, about 270-285 miles to a full tank (about 15.8 MPG, assuming i am actually using 18 gallons of the 18.5 gallon tank as i drive on reserve for a little bit). I know i have a gas leak because i can smell it, but i can probably find that on my own, but if you have had any experiences with gas leaks on a 16v feel free to share. I noticed while working on the car that my O2 sensor is not plugged into anything. The sensor is in the exhaust system, but the wire goes no where. I looked on my brother's 16v and our sensors are in completely different places, his is right before the cat, while mine is located on one of the pipes before they merge into one pipe (4 pipes go to 2 pipes go to the main exhaust pipe). Is this where it should be? and if it is, what does the wire connect to?

Thanks,
Jim

My 201 has a 14.5 gallon tank. I'm not aware that the 16V version had one that was any larger. IIRC the 124 chassis is 18.5 gal.

About the time my reserve light comes on it will take about 12.5 gallons.

If your 16V is an '85 it is gray market, and the emission control system configuration is probably not documented.

How have you gotten it through emission tests?

-sorry, i posted from my fathers name by mistake, this is Benzmacx

The manual says that it has a 70L tank, which is about 18.5 Gallons. It is a gray market car, as its an '85. I know nothing about the emissions of the car, we have had it for a two years and have not been through emissions yet here in CT. I think that the guy we bought it from knew it wouldn't pass california, where he lived, emissions and dumped the car before he got stuck with that bill.

I might be forced to bring the car back to my mech who just fixed my oil pressure problems... I would rather not do that, so some help would be much appreciated.

Jim
