easy way to tell is look at the fittings on the A/C lines if they have what looks like tire valve stems under metal caps its R-12...if they have a quick connect fitting its R-134.

AC dryer and Compression valve

I found ac tag its located under the hood on the left side its green. it says R-134

Know i have to change out my ac compressor now.
I was told that the ac system wont work to good if i dont change out my ac dryer and expansion valve. does anyone know if that is true??
if its true do you know if the expansion valve can just be cleaned with a special cleaner??

thanks

The dryer needs to be changed every time the system is opened to the atmosphere. It absorbs any residual moisture inside the system. If too much moisture is in the system it'll form acids that'll eat the insides of the system over time.

Expansion vavles are cheap and frequent source for leaks....

The reciever/dryer MUST be replaced any time the system is opened ot outside air...

When I was buying my CE, I was told the system had a slow leak and dreaded that it might be the evaporator.

They put dye in it and turned out to be o-ring leaks around the expansion valve. I split the cost with the seller and have ice cold air.
