300TE High Rear Suspension
There are many posts on the rear leveling systems, but this seems to be new. I went out to our '89 300TE (231,000 miles) and started driving down the road. It seemed really bouncy. I got out and looked and the back end was lifted way up. I have driven it for a few days now (I only go a few miles to work) and nothing has changed. It is as if the rear end is all spring and no absorber. The previous posts all seem to do with rear end sag. What about rear end lift. Oh, it never drops; even off or over night it stays lifted way up. And, it looks stupid. Any ideas of what is wrong?

there is a little valve
on the back of the car tha is attached to the frame with a link that attaches to part of the suspension. this senses when a load is in the car by its position and signals the pump to send more fluid to lift the rear of the car. check this, it may be stuck.

chances are the clamp on the suspension bar that connects the linkage to the proportioning valve has slipped. I'd get under there and see if you can re-position it. If things haven't slipped then you need a new valve.

Thanks, I'll check. In the meantime, I checked the hydralic fluid, and it is nearly empty. Is this related?

Possibly. The higher the rear, the more hydraulic fluid is in the system, i.e. in the rear hydraulic shocks. It is the hydraulic fluid that makes the height. Alternatively or in addition, if the diaphragm of the accumulators is leaky hydraulic fluid will enter the space that is normally occupied by nitrogen.
Of course this is assuming you do not have a leak. Good luck, Bruno
