1983 300td temp gauge problem

My 1983 300td Has A Problem With The Temp Gauge. It Registers A Low Temp Of Approx 40 And Then Ocasionally Pops Back Up To 90 Which Is About Normal For My Car. I Checked The Connector And It Seems To Be Making Good Contact With The Senor. Any Suggestions On A Solution ?

Thanks

Cm

I have had similar symptoms (temp gauge needle flickering) caused by bad negative battery cables on 2 84 diesels. The cables were corriding inside the terminals and jacket. Others have reported similar symptoms due to loose or rusty ground point behind the instrument cluster.
