190 2.5D Rear Diff Dead???
Hey all!
My 190 2.5D has just covered 196,000 miles, the diff has been whining a while but now i feel a rumble on the back end when accelerating, especially noticable between 25mph - 40mph after that it quietens down again! So I was wondering..... Is it the diff that has now died, or something else? Is it easy to change the diff on these? and what other 190 models share the 2.5 Diesels Diff cos I know theres 2 different diffs?! Help Please!!! Matt |

i would
suspect the half shafts before the diff. the diffs are extremely long lived. check out the half shafts. park the car with it in nuetral and held by the parking brake and reach up and grab the half shaft and see if it will wiggle. it shouldnt at all.

Which bearing is it?
The very first thing I would be doing is check the half shafts also.If you suspect one but aren't sure.Pull back the dust boot and look for discolored metal or dried out grease. If you still suspect the diff, check the oil level. If it's low you could be having bearing problems. If you'r still not sure, drain the gear oil and check the oil for any signs of metal. If the half shafts and diff check out ok,then you need to start checking out you'r wheel bearings.I'd hate to see you wasteing money by changing the wrong parts.

Hey!
Well strangest thing happened today! Took the car on a 300 mile run on the motorway (highway) was running about 80mph all the way and hey presto the noise and rattles have stopped?????!!!!!! What could it be? |

if the
half shaft is loose it wouldnt rattle at high speed but it will vibrate as the loosness allows the shaft to go off center to one side and stay there.
the shake might not be too bad... at first. tom w

You didn't mention the condition of the rear flex disc that carries the torque load to the diff. So is it possible that you don't know that is the most comon failure in that area or is it new or ok ?
