Sounds like your shift linkage bushings are worn or missing. My 96 C220 recently started to make a loud vibrating type sound at the shifter. Jacked the car up and noticed that both of the shift linkage bushings were gone. Bushings are ~$4 a piece if you do it yourself or about $100 to have the job done at the dealer.
