I would suggest turning the engine over by hand if you haven't already. And I always test starters out of the car before trading the old one,or installing the new one. You'r old starter may not have been bad.Since the new one is already in,and if you can turn the engine by hand.I would suggest manually jumping the new starter to make sure it's not defective.Over the years I've come across a few new and rebuilt starters and alternators that didn't work.If the engine turns, and the starter works when you jump it,you've got a bad relay, wire connection,or ignition switch.Sorry I can't be of more help then this.

It appears "52 plate" is British terminology for a one year old used car.

A140 is a Damlier product designed for a specific European target market.

Sorry for the digression. What I really wanted to ask is how you "turn the engine over by hand" on one of these?

Socket and breaker bar on the nut at the front of the crankshaft.Turn the engine clockwise just a little bit.If it won't budge, something is stuck somewhere.

Also makes it a lot easier (since I have forgotten when adjusting valves) to take it out of gear and remove the spark plugs.

After more thought, shouldn't a one year old Mercedes still be under warranty?
