129 check enging blues. ever hear of a proscan 2 ?

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the forum and have a 1998 sl500.
The check engine light came on 2 weeks ago and I reset it by disconnecting the battery. I also replaced the gas cap...
It just came on again today and I do not have a tool to check codes.
Has anyone purchased the proscan 2 ?
It is supposed to be odb2 and works with a laptop/
I am eager to find out which sensor needs to be replaced and want to get an inexpensive odb2 code scanner...

I bought one from a software developer on eBay (eBay ID=DVSTATE). The software he wrote was useless to me as I could never get it to run and he didn't reply to email after the first one or two. I was able to find generic software online that allowed me to read codes and clear them so it was not a total loss but don't expect the features to be over and above that unless you are lucky enough to have the software work for you.

Did you try it on your newer cars?

Yes, I bought it for my 1998 E300 that is OBDII compliant and which turned out to have a defective MAF sensor that caused the check engine light to come on. I was disappointed that the software, which included a dynometer and other performance monitoring functions would not work but I still was able to fix the MAF sensor and reset the light so it was worth $90 to me.

beejn,
If you do a search, you'll find that there have been extensive discussions here on scanners... from professional models to adapter/interface systems that run off a laptop/PC.
I have a BR-1 from this site... http://obddiagnostics.com/
Looks like they have a newer model now, BR-3.
Anyway, very handy and the software works terrific.
Despite having a Snap On MT2500 scanner, if I just want to dump a code on a OBD-II car, I reach for my BR interface/laptop.
