W126 Under Engine Splash Shield

Do the W126 cars come with a splash shield under the front of the engine compartment? It looks as if there should be one but there isn't on mine. The W126 service CD shows there is for the W124.

Yes. I installed one on my 1983 280SE, and on my brother's 300SE. It is available in plastic or metal form, and it screws directly under the front of the engine to pre-drilled mounting points. However, it usually gets misplaced after some years in the workshop when someone or other forgets to put it back after a service, and the owner doesn't bother checking....

My 89 300SE has one on it. The dealer lost it once and I made them replace it. It looks like someone lost it on my 91 190.

Your '89 300SE should have a large encapsulation panel underneath. With it removed, you can access things like the alternator from underneath and the engine oil drain plug.

The panel is held in place by 4 sheet metal type screws that have an 8mm head.

I searched this sites parts dept. for one and didn't see it. This is one item I wouldn't have a problem obtaining from a junk yard. I suspect that if it's a dealer item, you'll pay dearly for it.

Here's a photo of the screws:

Thanks guys. It looks like there should be one, there are short plastic vertical pieces attached to the frame rails but no horizontal panel. The splash shield would extend the life of the serp. belt too.

Mine came without, but since it's been summer I haven't had it on. Once the rain starts, I'll put it back on. Also, if anybody has a lowered car, it's a really good idea to keep the panel. Keeps your oil pan safe.
