Ignition: 420 SEL
Hi, I have a 1988 420 SEL @ 101K miles. The plugs, ignition wire set, and distributor cap/rotor were last replaced at just under 50K. Within the last month or so there have been a few times when the car didn't start right up. Given the facts do you think it's time to replace the parts listed above?
P.S. I'm asking the question b/c about a year ago I paid for a full diagnostic and the ignition was cited but I decided to put it off until absolutely necessary. Thought I would poll the group here especially since i don't want to pay again for a diagostic which was done in a different state from where I now live. Thank you much. |

I can't see the brand stamp on the plugs. As part of the diagnostic done last year, we turned off the shop lights and I could definitely see elec arcing upon startup. After 50K miles would it be unusual to have to replace everything - plugs, wire set and distrib cap/rotor? I tried searching the web but came up with nothing especially since old MB manual are now only available on disk. Thanks for the help.

Some folks experience problems with platinum plugs.

If you are seeing arcing that was the time when it was Neccesary..since then you have been getting far from ideal combustion. With wires sparking I would bank on a full replacement. Wires (use Beru) cap, rotor and plugs. Do NOT use platinums.
