check engine light and fuel gauge problems - connection???

My wife's 99 C230K has had problems with the check engine light coming on intermittedly ever since we changed out the battery a year or so ago. At about the same time, the fuel gauge also began to malfunction occasionally. Recently, it seems that the two problems occur simultaneously. Is there any connection? Would a faulty fuel gauge trip the check engine light? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I would check to see if there are any fault codes stored in the computer.

As far as the faulty fuel gauge is concerned, the fuel gauge sender is a common cause of this problem.
