Exclamation Timing for 84 280 sel?????

I would like to verify the timing for my 84 280 sel? I can not find the specs on degrees ect. I would also like to know what the rpms at idle should be. I think 6500 but not positive.

The car engine races and slows over and over again. The car has only65,000 miles on her and she has sat for a long time. Could this be an injector issue. One thing I did do was I disconnected the o2 sensor and the engine ran smooth. I replaced it and it still is doing the same thing. Any help would be most appreciated.

I would set it at 10 BTDC at a 700-750 RPM idle, with vacuum. You should get 32 degrees advance at 3500 RPM without vacuum.

You can probably fix your surge problem with a new O2 sensor. It is probably a Bosch single wire. It sounds like the present sensor is weak, which makes the computer think the mix is lean, then it over-corrects, which causes the surge.

is your car

a euro?

if so my book lists four different settings determined by engine number and or distributor number. so if it is euro post the numbers and i will give you the specs.

also have you checked vacuum? sometimes it causes surging if there is a leak.

Mine have always been happy at around 750 in Park or Neutral.

On the surging. Since you have an aftermarket computer and frequency valve, you will probably not be able to test the on-off ratio like you would on a US car.

I would suggest connecting the positive side of your meter to the o2 sensor and ground the negative. With the car at idle and completely warmed up (as in drive it) adjust the mixture until you get .75-.85 volts. Reconnect the sensor. If the rest of the setup is good, that should stop the surging. If it doesn't stop it, then just leave it.

This basically uses the sensor voltage to tune the mixture. Worked very well on one of my 280SL's.
