722.6 Transmission Fluid Color?

Posted this thread also on Diesel Forum...so far with no response.
Stupid question.....what color fluid should the 722.6 transmission on my 98 E-300TD be? Used the new "MB Transmission Tool" the other day and the fluid is a translucent yellow oil color not red? I had bought a spare liter of Tranny fluid from the MB Dealer today for my transmission and was surprised it was red.
What brand tranny fluid is clear or yellow? I'm stumped.....
Thanks

the fluid that is in the transmission was red at one time, since it has not been serviced either at all, or for a very long time it will turn that color, technically it is supposed to be red,

Ray, Thanks!
I just uncovered a post from 8/31/04 that Gilly had copied a whole MB Service
document that stated that the color could be anywhere from dark red to pale yellow depending on age and temperature. The title of the post was "99 S500 Transmission". It also stated that the color range does not indicate that a fluid change is necessary.
That makes me feel alot better......I thought the previous owner had put something funky in there! WEW!

Dont take what you read as gospel. Mercedes now recommends a 60,000 KM trans fluid change for the 722.6 and 722.9 transmissions. See link: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=136590

I never did believe in fill for life or rely on the FSS for oil change intervals (expecially with dyno oil).
