Hello,
Check engine light came on last nite and the car died while slowing down. It still runs rough. All electrical problems that I know of has been fixed. O2 sensor and Cat Converter was replaced 300 miles ago. This car has experienced voltage surges in the past. I have a little panel on by the battery. Light 4 is on. A friend told me you can push button on it and count the blinks to read the codes. How is this done????? |

You must have a California car as the mounted light only appeared on 93-95 Federal models.
Turn the key on engine OFF and depress the button for 2-4 seconds. The light will be lit as you press the button and go out as you release. The control unit will cause the light to blink out a fault code. One blink indicates no codes present. If there is more than one blink count them. This will be the first code. Repeat the code retrieval by again depressing the button and count the blinks. If you get the same number then there is only one code. Keep repeating till all codes are read. This is indicated by the repeat of the first code received.

Steve,
Turned Ignition key on dash light warning lights went on and went under hood. Light 4 was on (led) Held button down lite 4 went out, then blinked 4 times. Repeated again and light 4 blinked one time. No more blinks on next tries. What does 4 blinks mean???? What does 1 blink mean???? I believe this is a California Emissions Car that was sold new at Sutherland Motors in Spokane, WA |

I don't have a code table at home so I can't tell you what a code 4 means. Maybe someone else has a table. If you are only getting a single blink now you have erased the code and your light should be out.
Try it again when it comes back on. Only depress the button for 2-3 seconds. Six to eight seconds erases the code. I didn't mention that before as the cars with diagnostic modules and buttons have often worked slightly different that the federal cars that have to have an led added to retrieve codes (or use impulse counter).

That may be simular the later Fed , pre OB-2 led set-up
[ 94-95 E320 type]. A 4 blink code is Air Injection system[ air pump] inoperative. Check the plug/fuse for starters. May even be disconnected. PS Was down in Citra last Sunday and wish it had been weekday so I could have visited Steve B in Gainsville. Next time. Arthur |

Thanks,
Steve, Jim, and Arthur. I will check air injection pump. It appears from the looks of the muffler that I may be running rich mix. Looks lite black soot on that end. While checking under air cleaner I noticed that EHA was leaking fuel. Will new o-rings fix this??? Cannot find air pump, Sticker on car says meets CALIFORNIA and Canadian Standards. Have only one belt drive system. Could someone please tell me of its location??? The check engine light is still on and it appears that no codes were erased. Still 4 blinks and on the second try, one blink. |

hmmm, my experience is with
the E series. On it the air pump is above the alternator on the passenger side of the engine.

Thanks Jim,
I'll check when its light out. Still at work. I could not find any reference to it in the Haynes Manual. Gary |

glmoy - if you find it
follow a "pipe" to the manifold. If there is a flanged connection at the manifold take it apart and look in the holes of the pipe and manifold. If it is full of black "sooty" deposits they need to be cleaned out.

oops - that "pipe" does not
connect directly to the air pump. Look for an EGR valve somewhere in there behind the air pump.

Jim,
Now I'm puzzled.....!!!!!! The belt drive for the serpentine belt shows no air pump above the alternator for the 2.3 engine. It does show one for the 2.6 engine. Looked under manifold and around and found what is listed as an aux air valve, powered by 12v p/n 000 141 22 25 Is this the air pump for the 2.3 engine???? Sorry if I seem so stupid ![]() Gary |

As you noticed the 4cyl doesn't have an AIR pump.
I'm sorry I can't tell you more about the codes without a book. There are at least 40 pages of different codes for engine management systems. Not just different codes but different charts for different models and this is just in the 1993 code book. I doubt that the codes for a KE-Jetronic would bear any resemblance to those of a HFM-SFI car that Jim has.
