timing chain tensioner m119 see picture
I have a question. Before timing chain tensioner installation do one have to remove metal seal looking like ring around piston? It looks very weak so I'm thinking to remove it and prime main piston. What do you guys think? What should I do?
Thank you Victor

Should not need to prime this tensioner. Older versions, like those on the 4.5 you had to prime. Priming did not involve disassembly, rather you put it in a bucket of oil and pushed the piston in a couple times to blow out air and draw in oil.

Thanks for help Mike. So I will just put in tensioner and make that little metal ring be pushed out by oil pressure. You think it wil not fall off into oil pan or on chain?

The only thing that should move when the oil pressure comes up is the piston.

leaks now
I installed tensioner without removing that metal ring around the piston and it did not tension the chain. I heard chain slapping like there is no tension. I removed it and took off that metal ring and piston came out further. Reinstalled tensioner and slapping went away. I guess that ring did not let piston to travel out the housing when oil pressure was applied. The problem now is that oil leaks around tensioner like a sip. Shut the motor and will get back to it tomorrow after work. I can't see around the tesioner but guess I need new seal.

hello all,
Well I am new to this forum, and i am working on my 1998 S420(timing chain procedure) and i have the same question as this person did? Does the soft plunger retaining ring get removed before installation? Or will the oil pressure force it out? Thank you for any help |
